Summer Class 2025: Intro to Creative Writing

Class Description

8:00 – 9:30 AM PST | 11:00 AM – 12:30 PM EST

This course introduces students to the foundational elements of creative writing across genres—including poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction. Students will learn how to generate ideas, craft vivid imagery, develop compelling characters, and experiment with voice, structure, and tone. Through fun prompts, short readings, and writing activities, students will build confidence in their writing and discover their unique storytelling style. This course is open to all writing levels and ages 12–17.

Class Summary

Students will explore different genres and styles while completing creative exercises throughout the week. By the end of the course, each student will have a small portfolio of original pieces and a stronger understanding of their voice as a writer.

  • Generating ideas and overcoming writer’s block

  • Developing voice, tone, and style

  • Writing descriptive scenes and imagery

  • Creating characters and dialogue

  • Exploring different forms: poetry, fiction, and nonfiction

  • Responding to feedback and revising

  • Sharing and presenting original work

Students will participate in instructor-led and supervised lessons with activities during online sessions. They will then have the rest of the day to write at their own pace, applying the skills taught in class to their projects.

Meet Your Instructors

Keiko Rakin

Keiko Rakin is the Founder and CEO of the Young Authors’ Alliance, an international organization dedicated to uplifting underrepresented youth writers. An incoming senior at Alhambra High School, Keiko has been writing since the first grade and is currently working on publishing her 450-page fantasy novel. She has participated in renowned writing programs such as WriteGirl, Write the World, the UCLA Writing Extension, and Idyllwild Arts. At school, she serves as President of the Creative Writing Club, where she leads workshops and teaches writing techniques to fellow students. She is also a member of the Slam Poetry Club and has competed in several spoken word events. As the Student Board Member for the Alhambra Unified School District, Keiko represents over 14,000 students across Alhambra, Monterey Park, and the San Gabriel Valley. This summer, she will attend the prestigious Telluride Association Summer Seminar, a highly selective program where she will study the intersection of arts, writing, social justice, and Black feminist storytelling in Washington, D.C. Keiko previously taught last year’s Fantasy, Sci-Fi, and Speculative Fiction course and brings extensive experience in English tutoring, creative writing mentorship, and student leadership. She is passionate about nurturing youth voices and can’t wait to read her students’ stories!

Bonnee Song

Praised by Rhode Island Poet Laureate Rick Benjamin as "wicked talented," Bonnee has been writing poetry for almost 2 years. Having begun her poetry journey as a sophomore in high school with her piece My Glass House, she has since won a National Medal in Scholastic Arts & Writing, among regional accolades such as gold and silver keys. Her award-winning poem, Subtitles of an Email, has been featured at Therapicasso's inaugural arts gala and in the 2025 Scholastic Yearbook. Through a combination of poetry and advocacy, she is also a proud LA Poet Ambassador and the Original Prose & Poetry captain of her school's speech and debate team. In her free time, Bonnee loves cafe hopping, collecting pins, and writing opinion articles for her school paper.
